6 Design Features of an Old World Kitchen

February 25, 2015 by Lennie Sansone

Learn how to create a classic “old world kitchen” that will bring the entire family together.

If you prefer intricate moldings and dark wood cabinets, then you may enjoy turning your kitchen into an “old world” kitchen design. An old world kitchen is a balance of elegance and timeless craftsmanship.

The Cabinetry

When you start talking with your St. Louis kitchen remodel contractor, ask to look at the cabinetry choices first. You are going to find that it is a wood grain with elaborate molding around the borders. A dark wood cabinet is nice if you have an unusually large kitchen, as it adds a touch of class to the space, but for smaller kitchens use distressed whites or creams to keep the room feeling open.

The Flooring

Choose a dark wood floor and brighten it up with natural colored rugs in emerald greens or bold yellows. The effect of those colors on an almost black floor can be stunning.

The Counter Tops

Lighter hues of grays and blues make a beautiful countertop in an old world kitchen. Ask your kitchen remodel expert about adding white brickwork as a backdrop. This will give your kitchen the feel of cooking in the south of France.

The Appliances

You want your appliances to take a back seat when creating an elegant kitchen space. If your elements are dark, choose a dark-colored refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. For those who choose whitewashed cabinetry, stainless steel appliances will be a compliment.

The Fixtures

Look for a porcelain sink with modern amenities; this will fit in perfectly with the rustic charm you are going for. Keep the rest of the fixtures small so that they do not distract the eye from the other elements.

The Dining Table

The one piece that will really set your old world kitchen apart is the dining table. It should be as big as the space allows and made of washed wood that matches your cabinetry. If your kitchen is on the smaller side, consider an island with stool seating or a breakfast counter built in along the wall. Old world kitchens are all about bringing the whole family together in one space, and that feeling will be lost if you do not have a designated dining area in the room. If space is really an issue, ask your kitchen remodel expert to come up with some ideas on how you can incorporate that essential element into the space you have.
